"Just leave me alone, okay?" Claire muttered, her voice barely audible, as she collapsed onto the couch. The children’s shrieks, usually a comforting backdrop to her life, grated on her nerves. She felt leaden, slow. Even breathing felt like an effort. She picked up her husband, Tom’s, discarded jacket from the floor. She needed something of his near. In the pocket, she found a forgotten receipt, followed by a crumpled bank statement. The numbers swam before her eyes. The account was in his name. The amount… substantial. A cold, hard knot tightened in her stomach.
